Develop Excellence Awards Winners 2017

We have taken home the crown this year at the Develop Industry Excellence Awards 2017.

Universally Speaking have been awarded the best for QA & localisation. This award is a testament to our valued clientele, who put their trust in us to deliver quality localisation and QA services for their games.

The awards ceremony in Brighton hosted the best and brightest talent of the UK games scene, it was an amazing evening and we are privileged to have won our categories award.

GDC 2017

Universally Speaking are excited to announce that we shall be exhibiting at GDC again this year! On the 25th Feb the team will touch down in San Francisco to start an entire week of networking, learning and entertaining.  On the 1st March it will be open doors at the Moscone centre to a predicted 28,000 game industry professionals. Our team shall be in the South Hall at stand 2041 waiting excitedly to meet and network with the attendees.

We will be there to discuss and help with questions on localisation, quality assurance & audio.  Come past and say hi !

 

 

 

New Year, New US!

It’s a new year and a new us here at Universally Speaking, and we’re raring to go!

We’ve a number of major stops throughout 2017 including the likes of GDC in San Francisco, Nordic Game in Malmo, Casual Connect in Seattle and Gamescom in Cologne, but first we kick things off in our own backyard in London at Pocket Gamer Connects.

This Year @ Universally Speaking

2016 is drawing to a close. In the run up to the festive period we find ourselves as a company looking back, and what a year we’ve had! We’ve grown insurmountably throughout the year and a huge thank you has to go to our clients and, of course, our incredible quality assurance and localisation teams.

As a group we’ve won a number of awards of excellence, owing to the amazing work & professionalism we are able to do because of the trust our clients put in us. We were nominated for best localisation and QA service provider by Develop UK, and for two awards at the annual TIGA awards, where we won our nomination for outstanding Leadership!

We’ve been out and about a lot this year, spreading the word on what Universally Speaking is all about. We started the year in Amsterdam at Casual Connect, then dropped into GDC in San Francisco, we met some amazing people in Helsinki, Malmo, Berlin, Cologne and Paris until we rounded things off at home in London. If you see me on your travels next year come and say hello!

We’ve been privileged this year to work on many exciting projects with our amazing clients, such as Konami, Codemasters, Frontier and Amazon, to name a few! 2017 forecasts another giant step forward for Universally Speaking. We will be partnering with even more innovators from around the world to aid them with quality assurance, translation, localisation and localised voice overs.

Smartphone VR as an aid for high-end VR

Many articles have been written about Google’s entry-level virtual reality viewer Cardboard and Samsung’s Gear VR, and the released software as a stand-alone finished product. But as high-end VR hardware is released the relatively low-cost of viewer and smart phone combinations have started to be used as an aid for high-end VR development.

VR is still finding its feet in terms of defining best practices and fulfilling development potential. But it’s clear that developers can benefit by using VR viewers as a prototype platform to quickly try out a game idea before further development on high-end VR headset options. This also presents a great opportunity to have professional user experience testing and focus groups involved with the early concepts and ideas of a VR experience.

The benefits of embracing VR technology will cement new cost-effective and practical ways to test by identifying best practices, creating safe and thorough guidelines and knowing the best ways to respect the user. Getting feedback on issues like jump scares, quick brightness changes, the onset of motion sickness or how to guide the user could be very useful information to have early on in development.

There has also been an increase of indie developers creating a demo or proof-of-concept on VR viewers to pitch to publishers. This is a very accessible and cost effective way to outline the ideas and visuals as there is no need for a high specification PC and VR headset.

It’s no surprise that the use of VR Viewers and smartphones as development aids is on the rise; the low cost, shorter development times and familiar engines and SDKs places them in  a uniquely suitable position. This could drive developers to consider if a release version could work on mobile VR; and the more quality VR experiences out there the better!

Attending Interface on May 5th

A busy month of April is followed by a busy month of May! You will be able to find us at Interface on Thursday 5th May, surrounded by 350+ developers, publishers and investors of the games industry all looking to share ideas, make connections and learn about the latest trends and technology.

Once again Universally Speaking will be taking an active part in the conference, participating on the panel discussion “Is your game actually ready?”, chaired by James Batchelor. On the day, you will also be able to learn about tax breaks and of course you will be able to hear from Dan Pinchbeck, from The Chinese Room.

TIGA’s QA, LOCALISATION AND CS SUMMIT

As part of our very busy month of April, we will be attending TIGA’s QA, Localisation and CS Summit on Tuesday 26th April.

The summit will be the perfect stage to quiz QA, Localisation and CS specialists on best practice and learn about what works and what doesn’t seem to work quite as well. Our very own Loreto Sanz Fueyo will be presenting at the summit and discussing the merits of localising in the current market.

The summit will also see participants from Jagex, NextGen Skills Academy, Playground Games, Natural Motion and Media Molecule.

Women in Games Awards Finalist

MCV’s Women In Games Award returns this May and we are proud to announce that our very own CEO, Vickie Peggs, has been listed as a finalist in the Businesswoman of the Year award category.

Vickie Peggs founded Universally Speaking in 2002 and has led the company since then, meeting the challenges and changes the industry has gone through: the birth and explosion of mobile gaming, Facebook games, the growth of the indie landscape, new technologies, F2P, mobas, VR…

MCV’s Women In Games awards recognises and rewards the contribution of women to the UK games industry and this year it is supported by the Women in In Games (WIGJ) body, who sponsor the Rising Star award category. The awards are also backed by Facebook, whose head of gaming sales EMEA has joined the judging panel.

When asked for her reaction to the nomination, Vickie Peggs said she felt “humbled and honoured” to be considered as a finalist. As a company, Universally Speaking feel equally humbled and honoured to see our CEO’s name alongside the other worthy nominations.
